For the eighteenth year in a row, Southwest Middle school will be representing Brevard County and the Indian River Chapter in the State Mathcounts competition.
Mathcounts is an awesome program for middle grade students. It not only brings real world math problems into the classroom, but it also provides an arena for students to explore and share mathematical ideas. My math teams, who have won 18 years in a row, love competing. They create formulas that turn six-minute problems into six-second problems. The class is always a relaxed atmosphere where learning is fun. After working hard our Mathletes like to wind down with a game of chess or just kick back and socialize.
Before we go into competitions against other schools, our teams have a preemptive victory party, that way, no mater what the outcome our celebrations are always joyous. Since our teams usually place in the top three, we often have another party celebrating our achievements.
One reason my teams do so well is that they prepare their minds to receive victory. I teach them to see the invisible. That means they envision the victory before the competition takes place. This acts like an anchor that pulls them to where they want to be. Next, I teach them to believe the incredible. Inside each of us is an incredible power, a power that when unlocked will cause explosive changes and bring about extraordinary results. The last piece to great achievement is achieving the impossible. Have you ever noticed the word impossible begins with IM. If we say I’m going to see my goals as realities and won’t stop until I achieve them and I’m, confident that I have within me the incredible power to fuel my dreams, then all things are possible.
Consider living by this motto: Never compete against someone. That will limit you to their best performance. Always compete against yourself. That way your potential is unlimited.
Below I have placed information about Mathcounts and I hope you will get involved.
